USA USEFUL TIPS
Taxation in United States
In the United States federal, state, and local governments impose income taxes.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and various Tax Authorities depending on a
State are responsible for collection of personal income taxes. Generally your
employer withholds income tax from your wages or salary and pays it directly to
the government.
Each year every US citizen and every non-resident who works or worked in United
States must complete Individual Income Tax Return and file it to US Tax Authorities
by April 15th. On the Income Tax Return individual must show all of his income,
its sources, taxes paid on that income and calculate the amount of tax liability
and taxes overpaid according to US tax law. US Tax Authorities will compare the
information provided on the Return with the information provided by the employers
and the check for taxes overpaid will be issued to individual.
That’s basically how the Tax System in United States works. Usually taxes withheld
are more than tax liability and individual is entitled for the Refund, but in
very rare cases employer withholds less taxes that he should. In such situation
individual paid less tax than his tax liability is and his Refund amount is negative
- individual becomes liable to cover his tax debt to US Tax Authorities. Failure
to pay taxes you owe could cause problems for you in the future if you apply for
any type of visas to return to the United States.
Special taxation of J-1, F-1, M-1 and Q-1 visa holders
As a foreign student working in the USA, you will be required to pay certain
taxes, but will not have to pay other taxes.
Taxes – You Do Pay
Federal Income Tax - this tax is paid to the federal (national) government by
all income-earning individuals. It is paid on income from salaries, wages, tips,
etc. Approximately 10-15 % of your salary will be withheld for federal income
tax.
State and City Income Taxes - States and Cities may charge extra income tax according
to local laws. State income tax rate is approximately 5-8 % and City tax rate
is 1-3 % of your income.
Generally, 15-20 percent of your income may be withheld for tax purposes.
Taxes – You Don’t Pay
Social Security, Medicare, Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA). You must have the
Social Security card and number, but you are EXEMPT from paying Social Security,
Medicare, and Federal Unemployment tax. Sometimes, employers make a mistake and
withhold these taxes. You can tell if this happened by looking at your payslip
(the paper with your wage details). If you do see any deductions under the word
“FICA” or “FUTA”, “Social Security“ or “Medicare“, then the employer has made
a mistake. Please ask your employer for a refund of these taxes withheld in error
or contact your program sponsor if you need assistance in resolving this problem.
Even, though we provide Social Security and Medicare tax refund service, we strongly
advise that you arrange the refund of SS/MED taxes with your employer before you
leave United States.
